Why Attend?

Be empowered in your instructional leadership. Curriculum Management Solutions, inc. – CMSi — has been auditing and evaluating the design and delivery of curriculum with all its incumbent processes and operations for nearly 40 years.  Since the first CMSi Curriculum Audit™ conducted by Dr. Fenwick English in Columbus Public Schools in 1979, CMSi has assisted over 450 school systems in 46 states as well as the District of Columbia, and in several other countries, including Canada, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Bermuda.  As in the beginning, the primary goal for CMSi is to provide districts with reports, data, recommendations, and services that, when implemented, will improve student achievement and the overall quality of student learning.

Learn what it means to be a curriculum auditor. For nearly 40 years, the Curriculum Management Audit™ (CMSi) has been the premier tool for school districts to analyze the effectiveness of processes and programs at an organizational level.   It provides a unique, independent review of policy framework; scope and quality of curriculum; consistency and equity in schools and program implementation; effectiveness of programs and process monitoring; and use and allocation of budget and resources for improved productivity.

Add to your curricular toolbox. This 3-day intensive overview of the basic principles of curriculum design, assessment, and instructional alignment introduces participants to an entirely new way to view curriculum and all the system-level components required to effectively manage its design and delivery in schools.  Also the first step in understanding curriculum auditing and the CMSi Curriculum Audit, this approach is designed to keep student learning and its improvement at the forefront of all district and school-level decision making.

Hear from renowned experts. Our curriculum trainers have been public educators in K-12 education, and some have served in higher education. It is this wealth of experience with day-to-day school and district operations that maintains the level of quality and relevance in Curriculum reviews, training programs, and workshops.

Network with K-12 practitioners just like you. You will be surrounded by K-12 practitioners from all levels and backgrounds who are there for the same reason you are: to further themselves on their curriculum and instruction journey.

This three-day intensive overview of the basic principles of curriculum design, assessment, and instructional alignment introduces participants to an entirely new way to view curriculum and all the system-level components required to effectively manage its design and delivery in schools. Also, the first step in understanding curriculum auditing and the CMSi Curriculum Audit, this approach is designed to keep student learning and its improvement at the forefront of all district and school-level decision making. The following issues are addressed throughout the training:

  • What is the role of policy, plans, governance, and administration in managing student learning?
  • What is the importance of curriculum alignment and how do we achieve it?
  • What minimum components are needed in a quality written curriculum?
  • What is the most important purpose of curriculum?
  • How does curriculum design impact student achievement, even for underperforming students?
  • What are system-level processes and procedures that connect curriculum to classroom instruction?
  • What is the proper role and purpose of assessment?
  • How can we know if we have the “right” data and feedback?
  • Why do we monitor instruction?
  • What should we look for during classroom visits? What is most critical?
  • How do we move forward in improving system functions to ensure higher student achievement?

These questions are presented in the context of the five audit standards for managing curriculum. The training will give participants a new perspective on effective management practices within school systems, with specific criteria and guidelines for implementing them. These principles, organized under the five audit standards of control, direction, equity and connectivity, feedback, and productivity, help educators create a structure within which all aspects of school districts can function systemically to improve teaching and learning in every classroom.

This multi-day set of trainings equips district leaders and teachers to develop a framework for written curriculum that is unit based and supportive of student-centered, cognitively challenging and engaging instruction.  Curriculum Writing is comprised of 5 modules designed to be delivered over a period of several months. These modules include:

  1. The Foundation of Curriculum
  2. The Structure of Curriculum
  3. Finalizing Unit Development, Unit Objectives, and Scope and Sequence
  4. Formative Assessment Development and Rubrics
  5. Model Lessons, Activities, and Strategies

The foundational premise of these training modules includes the following beliefs:

  • Quality curriculum design must support the district’s vision for effective instruction;
  • Effective instruction requires differentiation of both curriculum and instruction;
  • Student learning occurs at variable rates; therefore, instructional pacing must be tighter for macro units of time (unit, semester, or year), but looser at the micro level (day, week, sub-unit) to allow for flexibility of pacing.
  • The highest quality learning occurs when teachers engage (and challenge) students with the content both cognitively and personally, and use approaches that are responsive to the ethnic, socio-economic, and linguistic diversity of the child;
  • Instructional effectiveness depends on a variety of approaches suitable for the students’ needs and preferences in the classroom;
  • Teachers are professionals and, with proper support, can be relied on to make the best instructional decisions for students;
  • Formative assessments are the most valuable tools for yielding to teachers the information they need to plan instruction in response to student need.
